Volkswagen's Sales Up in January - Best Start in a Decade

    AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Feb. 3 -- Volkswagen of America, Inc.
reported sales of 11,119 for the month of January, representing a 29.2 percent
increase over last year's figure of 8,608.
    It was the best January for the German automaker in the U.S. since 1988.
    Volkswagen's sales were again led by its popular Jetta model with sales of
6,278, an increase of 27.4% over last year's 4,929.  The new Passat,
introduced last fall, continued to gain momentum with sales of 2,563, a 114.5
percent increase over 1997's mark of 1,195.
    Also notable were January sales of Volkswagen's Cabrio model at 689, up
47.2 percent over the same month in 1997 when sales were 468.
