Visteon Automotive Systems and AlliedSignal Will Deliver TurboGenerator(TM) To Give Customers Access to Affordable On-site PowerDEARBORN, Mich., Jan. 21 -- In a move that will help power the future, Visteon Automotive Systems and AlliedSignal Power Systems Inc. announce today a strategic alliance to design, develop and manufacture AlliedSignal's TurboGenerator(TM) Power System. The TurboGenerator is a cost-effective alternative to purchasing electricity from the power grid. The portable power unit has applications for convenience stores, restaurants, health clubs, dry cleaners, and any business with power demands between 40 and 500 kilowatts. "For business owners who want to reduce their energy bill and still have a reliable electricity supply, the TurboGenerator is the smartest choice," stated Tony Prophet, president of AlliedSignal Power Systems Inc. The alliance is Visteon's first significant business venture in a market outside the automotive industry. Visteon's Power Electronic Control System and related electrical controls will be the "brain" of the TurboGenerator. This brain will serve as the electrical interface that assesses and manages the flow of power in response to customer need. AlliedSignal will be responsible for mechanical parts production, final assembly and test. Visteon's Power Electronic Control System is one of many technologies that Visteon is tailoring and targeting for applications outside of the automotive industry. "This represents Visteon's commitment to leveraging its expertise and experience in a wide variety of markets outside of the automotive industry," said Craig Muhlhauser, vice president, Global Marketing, Sales and Service, Visteon. "This alliance is a tremendous opportunity because it enables us to apply our technological capabilities to help make our customer AlliedSignal even more successful and provide us access into a new market." The alliance is expected to produce as much as $400 million in revenue for Visteon through 2002. Visteon's leading-edge electric vehicle technology, which will be used in the TurboGenerator, made the choice a natural for AlliedSignal. "We are extremely excited to work with Visteon to bring the TurboGenerator to the market," said Prophet. "Visteon's experience and technological expertise made the choice easy for us. Our two companies share a similar spirit and commitment to excellence that promises to bring the best product to the market." Unlike conventional gas turbines, the TurboGenerator uses AlliedSignal's proprietary air foil-bearing technology, rather than oil lubricants. With only one moving part -- a single shaft on which the compressor, turbine and generator are mounted -- the TurboGenerator achieves greater reliability, quieter operation, lower vibrations and reduced maintenance costs. AlliedSignal has formed alliances with Unicom, Sonat Energy Services, Mercury Electric Corporation and Energis Resources to sell and service the TurboGenerator in the United States, Canada and Argentina. AlliedSignal also recently announced that Honeywell will be the authorized service provider for the TurboGenerator. Visteon, an enterprise of Ford Motor Company , has 78,000 employees located in 74 plants, including 29 joint venture facilities, and 30 sales offices, engineering and technical centers in 19 countries around the world.
