Delphi Automotive Opens China Steering and Brake Operation

    SHANGHAI, China, Jan. 13 -- Delphi Automotive Systems today
officially opened Delphi Shanghai Steering and Chassis Systems Company, Ltd.
(DSSCS), a production facility for automotive steering and brake systems in
the Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone in Shanghai.  The operation is wholly-owned by
Delphi Automotive Systems and will represent an initial investment of
approximately 29 million USD.  The total output of the plant will be for
export during this initial phase of operation.
    Officials from Delphi Automotive Systems, General Motors China, local
automotive companies and the Shanghai Municipality attended the opening
ceremonies.  Speaking on behalf of Delphi Automotive Systems, Delphi Chassis
General Manager Alan S. Dawes said, "Delphi Shanghai Steering and Chassis
Systems today officially becomes part of the rapidly-growing Delphi Automotive
presence in China.
    "Although this plant will initially concentrate on the export market, we
look forward to growing the operation to serve the rapid expansion of the
Chinese automotive industry as well," Dawes added.  "Delphi sincerely believes
that our success as a company is closely linked to the growth and development
of this vital Chinese industry.  With the assistance and close cooperation of
our employees and the Chinese government, we eagerly anticipate the future
development of Delphi Shanghai Steering and Chassis Systems."
    DSSCS will employ approximately 450 people in an 11,000 square meter
building.  The operation is situated on a 47,000 square meter site, allowing
ample room for future expansion.  The plant will manufacture drum brakes and
electric power steering units.
    Delphi Automotive Systems currently has eleven joint ventures, three
wholly-owned facilities and seven license agreements in China.  Delphi's China
projects cover a wide range of automotive components and systems products,
including power and signal distribution systems, steering systems, air
conditioning systems, engine management systems, brake components, shock
absorbers, alternators and maintenance-free batteries.
