Ward's Reports Estimated Production

    SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Jan. 8 -- After a two-week holiday
shutdown, vehicle production in the U.S., Canada and Mexico is expected to hit
302,395 units this week, including 150,271 cars and 152,124 trucks, according
to Ward's Automotive Reports.
    With this week's estimates, calendar year North American output now totals
304,060, down 27.3 percent from the 418,004 built in like-1997.
    In the U.S., automakers are expected to produce 234,415 vehicles this
week, up from the 1,593 cars built last week when most plants were closed for
the holidays.  To date, calendar 1998 U.S. vehicle output totals an estimated
236,008, 24.8 percent behind like-1997's pace.
    Canadian vehicle production should hit 47,141 vehicles this week, up from
only 72 cars built a week ago.  Estimated calendar 1998 Canadian vehicle
production now stands at 47,213, down 33.8 percent from the 71,367 built in
like-1997.
    Of the cars and trucks slated for production this week in the United
States, General Motors Corp. accounts for 33.5 percent; Ford Motor Co.,
26.3 percent; Chrysler Corp., 16.1 percent; Honda of America Mfg. Inc.,
6.1 percent; Toyota Motor Mfg. Inc., 3.9 percent; Nissan Motor Mfg. Corp.,
3.6 percent; New United Motor Mfg. Inc., 3.2 percent; Subaru-Isuzu Automotive
Inc., 1.7 percent; Mitsubishi Motor Mfg. of America Inc., 1.6 percent;
AutoAlliance International Inc., 1.0 percent; Mercedes-Benz U.S. International
Inc., 0.6 percent; BMW of North America Inc., 0.5 percent; and other
manufacturers, 1.9 percent.
