Chrysler International Reports Record Month, Record Year

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Jan. 8 -- Chrysler International
reported record sales of 21,304 units for the month of December, up 5 percent
from the same period a year ago. For the 1997 calendar year, 237,060 units
were sold, up 7 percent from 1996, also setting a new record for the period.
Sales records were set in 1997 in 21 of the 42 major markets in which
Chrysler products are sold. Minivans, for the first time, are Chrysler's
biggest seller outside North America, as the Chrysler Voyager accounted for
26.2 percent of total international sales. The Jeep(R) Cherokee accounted for
24.2 percent of Chrysler's international results, the Jeep Grand Cherokee 16.8
percent and the Chrysler Neon 14.9 percent.
"Even though vehicle sales in most international markets saw little or no
growth in 1997, we still managed to increase our presence worldwide," said
Theodor R. Cunningham, Executive Vice President - International Operations.
"In particular, our investment in five right-hand-drive products is paying
dividends. We sold about 50,000 right-hand-drive vehicles around the world in
1997, representing 21 percent of our total international volume. As right-
hand-drive markets continue to grow, particularly in Asia, those products
will become even more significant in the long term."
Venezuela was Chrysler's largest market in 1997, reporting sales of 20,716
units, followed by China (20,452), the United Kingdom (19,214), Germany
(18,366), Japan (14,321) and Spain (14,138).
Europe remains Chrysler's largest region, totaling 105,918 units for the
year, up 4 percent. The Asia/Pacific region followed with 65,079 units, Latin
America with 47,667 units and Middle East/Africa with 18,396 units. Latin
America is Chrysler's fastest growing region, exhibiting 112 percent growth
last year.
