Intermet Announces Major Order for Iron Castings

    TROY, Mich., Jan. 7 -- Intermet Corporation
today announced that it has been awarded a major program to supply cast
ductile iron steering knuckles for use in the automotive and light truck
market.  The castings covered by this new order will be used on eight
different General Motors vehicles.  Average annual tonnage for the
entire program is 40,000 tons with parts ranging in weight from 9 to 24 pounds
each.
    The castings will be produced at three Intermet plants: Archer Creek
Foundry in Lynchburg, Virginia, New River Foundry in Radford, Virginia and
Wagner Foundry in Decatur, Illinois.  Production is scheduled to begin in June
1998.

and marketing.  "These safety components fit well with our capabilities and we
look forward to a smooth transition into production."
