American Honda Announces 1997 Sales

American Honda 1997 Sales Shatter Records
DETROIT, Jan. 7 -- Total American Honda 1997 vehicle sales of
940,386 were up 11.8 percent from 1996 and shattered the previous record for
the company of 854,879 set back in 1990, according to sales figures released
today by American Honda Motor Co., Inc.
December American Honda sales of 78,981 were up 15.0 percent from December
1996 and led by a 25.8 percent increase in sales of the new Accord.
Highlights from the record-setting year include:
* Record Honda Division sales of 832,243, up 13.5 percent from '96, the
previous record;
* Increased Acura Division sales of 108,143;
* Record light truck sales of 111,006, up 92.8 percent and topped by the
new-in-'97 CR-V, with sales of 67,752;
* Record Civic sales of 315,546, up 9.0 percent from 1995, the previous
mark;
* A record-setting 75 percent increase in sales of the Acura CL luxury
coupe, the first Acura model designed, engineered and manufactured in
the U.S.;
* Record North American production of 809,000 vehicles.
"It was a great sales year and a year of great change for American Honda,"
said Tom Elliott, executive vice president. "Light truck sales topped 100,000
for the first time ever and consumer acceptance of the two vehicles designed
and engineered for the North American market and built only in America -- the
Honda Accord and Acura CL -- has been outstanding.
"With the introduction of the North American-made Honda minivan and new
Acura TL later in the year, coupled with the continued expansion of Honda's
North American production capacity, we expect these trends to continue in the
future."
The Honda Division's December sales of 71,266 set an all-time record,
breaking the previous mark of 69,688 set in 1987. Accord sales of 37,893 also
topped the previous December record of 37,057 set back in 1988.
