General Motors Statement in Response to EPA's Final Rule Issued 12/16/97, Calling for National Low Emissions Vehicle (NLEV) ProgramWASHINGTON, Dec. 17 -- The following statement may be attributed to Dennis R. Minano, GM Vice President of Public Policy and Chief Environmental Officer: We are very pleased that the EPA has issued a voluntary NLEV rule calling for participation by all Northeastern states as well as all auto manufacturers. The program is the result of three years of discussions between the worldwide auto industry, the Northeastern states, environmental organizations, and EPA. EPA has determined that NLEV will result in emissions reductions in the Northeastern states equal to or greater than those possible through their adoption of the California emissions-control program -- and that NLEV is the best way to achieve cleaner air nationwide at the lowest cost to consumers. While we have not had an opportunity to review the rule in its entirety, we strongly support EPA's intent to maintain a national, uniform, and coherent air quality program.
