Emitec ConiCat(TM) Offers Emissions Solution

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Dec. 12 - Emitec GmbH has developed the
ConiCat(TM), a conically shaped metal substrate for catalytic converters,
designed to help vehicles meet increasingly stringent emissions standards.
The unique design of the ConiCat(TM) allows it to be placed closer to the
engine for faster heating and increased emissions reduction.
"The ConiCat(TM) offers automakers a cost-effective solution to meeting
stringent emissions standards proposed in the treaty signed in Kyoto," said
Wolfgang Maus, managing director of Emitec GmbH. "Its revolutionary design,
coupled with Emitec's metal substrates, raises the bar for catalytic
technology."
    The inlet cone of a catalytic converter traditionally has been empty;
however, Emitec's ConiCat(TM) is designed to fit into this cone filling it
with honeycombed, cone-shaped cells that distribute the gas stream and improve
the flow distribution to the main catalyst. Its placement closer to the
engine allows for quicker heating, which enables the catalytic converter to
reach its 300 degrees Celsius operating temperature much faster.
The ConiCat(TM) is smaller than conventional substrates; however, it
boasts 10 to 15 percent more metallic surface area to further enhance
emissions reduction. Its improved flow distribution to the catalytic
converter also increases the effectiveness and conversion rates throughout the
life of the converter.
Emitec has supplied ConiCat(TM) prototypes to several manufacturers and
hopes to begin mass production early next year, according to Maus.
Emitec, headquartered in Lohmar, Germany, is the leading designer and
manufacturer of metallic substrates for catalytic converters. The company was
formed in 1986 and is a 50/50 joint venture between Siemens Automotive AG and
GKN Automotive AG. Emitec's North American operations are headquartered in
Auburn Hills, Mich., with a manufacturing facility in Fountain Inn, S.C. to
support domestic automakers.
