IUE Cheers Expansion of GM Operations in Ohio; Moraine Facility to Build Next Generation of Sport Utility Vehicles

DAYTON, Ohio, Dec. 11 -- IUE officials welcomed an early
holiday announcement of an investment by General Motors in a multimillion-
dollar expansion of GM's Moraine Assembly.
"This financial commitment will have a significant impact on Local 801
members and their future," said IUE-GM Conference Board Chairman Harold "Nick"
Nichols. "It demonstrates the success of local union management's commitment
along with corporate and international union involvement in securing the
economic future for the Dayton area."
IUE Local 801 represents more than 8,000 members at three assembly plants
in the Dayton area. GM will invest nearly $800 million at these locations and
bring the next generation of the Oldsmobile Bravada, GMC Jimmy and Chevrolet
Blazer to Ohio.
"The efforts of the workers, bolstered by the community's participation,
meant the difference," Nichols said. "All of IUE -- from our members on the
shop floor all the way to our top officers -- worked together as a force for
working families to turn rumor into reality."
GM's decision to bring this new work to Dayton is due in large part to the
innovative leadership shown during recent contract negotiations by the IUE/GM
Conference Board and the Shop Committees of both the GM Powertrain and GM
Truck Division plants. The new agreements, which were ratified overwhelmingly
by the membership of Local 801, have set the stage for job security well into
the 21st century.
"The Conference Board, International Union and Local 801 Shop Chairmen
Gary McGuire, Jim Marlow and Donnie Owens have worked hard to 'bring it home'
for the members of Local 801," said IUE District 7 President Michael Bindas.
"They are to be commended for their efforts. IUE members look forward to
their integral role in building GM's next generation of sport utility
vehicles."
