North American Car and Truck of the Year Jury SelectedDETROIT, Nov. 20 -- More than 45 of North America's toughest automotive journalists have been chosen to serve as the 1998 North American Car and Truck of the Year Awards jury. Members of the distinguished group will determine winners of the car and truck competition to be announced on Monday, January 5, 1998 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The 48 jury members will review 33 cars and trucks by December 15, 1997, assigning points to each vehicle. The points are based upon vehicle characteristics such as styling, spaciousness, handling and engine capabilities. The vehicles accumulating the most points will be named the North American Car and Truck of the Year. To be eligible for the 1998 awards, the cars and trucks must have been introduced into the North American market between December 15, 1996 and December 15, 1997. Cars must have anticipated sales of at least 5,000 units a year; trucks require expected sales of 2,000 units annually. Vehicles must be all new or have significant design, structural or mechanical changes from a previous year in order to be eligible.
