Alfred C. Montag Named Vice President and General Manager for Cross Huller

    FOND DU LAC, Wis., Nov. 12 -- Giddings & Lewis, Inc. has
appointed Alfred C. Montag as Vice President and General Manager of the
company's Cross Huller business unit, effective November 15.
    Mr. Montag has more than 40 years of experience in the machine tool
industry, including 18 years with the former Cross Company in various
management assignments in Fraser, Mich., and in Germany, England and Japan.
The Cross business became part of Giddings & Lewis with the 1991 acquisition
of the Cross & Trecker Corporation in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.
    Mr. Montag began his career in 1953 with Ford Motor Company after earning
a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Case Institute of
Technology.  In 1955, he joined the Cross Company as a sales engineer at the
Fraser facility.  In 1959,  he was sent to Germany as President of Cross
International.  After nine years in Europe, Mr. Montag was named a Director of
the Cross Company.
    In 1970, Mr. Montag became President of Surftran Corporation in Madison
Heights, Mich., which grew worldwide under his leadership before being sold to
Bosch.  In 1980, he rejoined the Cross Company, which had become a division of
the  Cross & Trecker Corporation, serving the company for the next three years
as Vice President of international operations.  In 1983, Mr. Montag started
Grob Systems, Inc. (a subsidiary of Grob) in Bluffton, Ohio, serving as Chief
Operating Officer.  In 1986, he became General Manager of Heller Machine Tools
L.P. in Troy, Mich., a position he held for the next 10 years before starting
his own consulting firm for the machine tool industry.  Mr. Montag and his
wife, Joan, reside in Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.
