Alias/Wavefront Demonstrates Momentum in Design Market at AUTOFACT '97DETROIT, Nov. 4 -- Alias/Wavefront, a subsidiary of Silicon Graphics, Inc. , today announced that it continues to realize unprecedented expansion of its leadership position in the industrial design market. Fueled by a dramatic increase in sales to both existing and first-time customers, Alias/Wavefront reported a 44% increase in sales over the previous fiscal year in the industrial design portion of its business. Alias/Wavefront attributes its success to the delivery of new advances in computer-aided industrial design (CAID) technology as with the launch of new releases of its 3D industrial design systems: Alias(R) Studio(TM) 8.5, Alias(R) AutoStudio(TM) 8.5 and Alias Designer(TM) 8.5. "In the past year, we've broken all previous records for sales of our industrial design products," said Al Lopez, business manager for Alias/Wavefront CAID products. "We've remained committed to industrial design as a strategic part of our long-term business plan. Our growth demonstrates that our customers are clearly reaping the rewards from the investments we've made in enhancing our design products." Running on both Silicon Graphics(R) and IBM(R) RS/6000(TM) workstation platforms, Alias/Wavefront CAID products are used by designers around the world to model everything from laptop computers, sporting equipment, cellular telephones and children's toys to fashion accessories. The company is also the leader in design software specifically developed for automotive designer needs. Alias/Wavefront is demonstrating its complete suite of CAID products at AUTOFACT '97, November 4-6th in booth #1047 of the Cobo Exhibition Center in Detroit. Customer Momentum In the past year, Alias/Wavefront completed significant sales to existing customers including Philips Design, Daewoo (UK), Rubbermaid, BMW, Renault, Honda and Audi. One of the largest sales in the company's history was to Ford Motor Company valued at more than $4 million for software and services. As a significant step in the implementation of Ford's C3P program, the purchase of AutoStudio represents the automaker's decision to replace its existing computer-aided industrial design (CAID) processes and standardize on Alias/Wavefront software. The list of first-time customers who have recently added Alias/Wavefront software include Nokia Mobile Phones, K2, National Presto Industries, Trek Bicycle, 3M Company and Aluminum Company of America. New Features for Designers Alias/Wavefront's new 8.5 CAID product releases introduce substantial productivity enhancements through user interface and workflow improvements. The 8.5 releases also include further refinements to data exchange technology for direct transfer of Alias/Wavefront data files to SDRC's I-DEAS Master Series(TM), CATIA(R) software products by Dassault Systemes and Pro/ENGINEER(TM) by PTC. With the new data exchange technology in place, designers and engineers can more easily exchange and share data directly between Alias/Wavefront geometric models and leading CAD systems. The 8.5 releases also feature new tools aimed at creating precision surfaces to further facilitate collaboration between creative designers and mechanical engineers during the product design process. (See Design Product Summary for a complete list of product features.) Designer 8.5, Studio 8.5 and AutoStudio 8.5 are planned to ship by January 1998 and will be available starting at $7,495, $24,995 and $74,995 respectively. Upgrades to the 8.5 release are free-of-charge to existing Alias/Wavefront maintenance customers. (Prices are indicated in U.S. funds and will vary outside of the U.S.) Alias/Wavefront provides designers and artists with advanced computer graphics software that helps unleash the power of their creativity.
