Chrysler Posts Second-Best October for U.S. Sales

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Nov. 3 -- Chrysler Corporation
sold 188,263 cars, trucks, minivans and Jeep(R) vehicles in October,
setting U.S. sales records for three body groups and five individual vehicles.
The overall total was Chrysler's second best for the month, down
8 percent from the all-time record 205,393 vehicles sold in October 1996.
"Without the effects of model changeover on sales of Dodge Intrepid and
Chrysler Concorde, we might have hit that record," said James P. Holden,
Executive Vice President - Sales and Marketing. "Our smaller car lines set
new highs for the month, and total retail sales nearly matched the record."
October sales records were set for Dodge Neon, Stratus and Avenger, and
for Chrysler Sebring Coupe and Town & Country minivans. By body group,
records were set for PL (Dodge and Plymouth Neon), JA (Dodge Stratus, Chrysler
Cirrus, Plymouth Breeze) and FJ (Avenger and Sebring Coupe).
"The overall market may still be a bit soft, but we're pleased at what
we're seeing and confident about the coming months," Holden said.
Chrysler reported the first sales of the all-new Dodge Durango sport
utility vehicle in October. U.S. dealers delivered 3,025 Durangos during the
month.
Passenger car sales were 53,042, compared with 61,213 a year ago. Truck
sales, including pickups, minivans and Jeep vehicles, totaled 135,221 vs.
144,180 in October 1996.
For the calendar year to date through October, Chrysler's U.S. sales were
1,933,595 vehicles, compared with 2,091,394 in the comparable period a year
ago.
