Subaru Sales Climb - Best Sales Month of 1997

    CHERRY HILL, N.J., Nov. 3 -- Subaru of America, Inc. (SOA)
today announced its October sales figures -- the best sales month of 1997.
Subaru recorded a sales total of 14,001 units -- up 17 percent over the same
period in 1996.  Overall, Subaru year-to-date sales are up 10 percent over the
same period last year.
    The Legacy model line led sales with 9,185 units posted.  The Outback
accounted for 5,504 units of the Legacy line-up -- making October the second
consecutive month that Outback surpassed 5,000 units.
    Forester, the company's all-new passenger car-based sport utility vehicle,
posted its second best sales month with 2,896 units since Forester sales
started in July 1997.
    Subaru of America, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Fuji Heavy
Industries Ltd. of Japan.  Headquartered near Philadelphia, the company
markets and distributes Subaru vehicles, parts and accessories through a
network of nearly 630 franchised dealers across the United States.  All Legacy
models sold in the U.S., including the Outback, are produced at the company's
American manufacturing plant, Subaru-Isuzu Automotive, Inc., near Lafayette,
Ind.
