University of Tennessee to Host Inaugural SAE Southern Automotive Manufacturing Conference & Expo Set for Aug. 11-13 in Nashville

WARRENDALE, Pa., Oct. 29 -- The University of Tennessee
Institute for Public Service will host the inaugural SAE Southern Automotive
Manufacturing Conference & Exposition (SAMC), August 11-13, 1998 at the
Nashville Convention Center in Nashville, Tennessee.
This event, recently established by the Society of Automotive Engineers
(SAE) to support the needs of automotive manufacturers and their suppliers in
the southeastern United States, will feature a complete technical education
program and a 100+ company exposition. Tom Ballard, Associate Vice President,
The University of Tennessee Institute for Public Service, will serve as
General Chairman for the event.
"Nearly 18 percent of Tennessee's manufacturing workforce is employed by
an automotive manufacturer or supplier," said Ballard. "The total payroll for
these 95,100 employees is estimated to be 3.2 billion annually. These numbers
speak for themselves regarding the importance of this industry to our state's
economic vitality. We are extremely pleased to work with SAE to provide this
continuing education and networking opportunity to automotive engineers and
executives in the southeast corridor of the U.S."
Major subject areas to be addressed in the conference and exhibit include:
lean manufacturing, electronic commerce, integrated/concurrent product
development, suppliers as partners, agile manufacturing, design for
manufacturability/assembly, emerging technologies and applied solutions,
environmentally conscious manufacturing, and staffing for performance.
SAE was founded in 1905 to meet the technical needs of design engineers in
mobility-related industries. SAE is now reaching out to manufacturing
professionals to help improve the complete set of processes and systems
involved in the vehicle's total life cycle -- design engineering,
manufacturing, operations, service and disposal/reuse.

SAE is a non-profit educational and scientific organization dedicated to
the advancement of mobility technology to better serve humanity. More than
70,000 engineers and scientists who are SAE members develop technical
information on all forms of self-propelled vehicles including automobiles,
trucks and buses, oil-highway equipment, aircraft, aerospace vehicles, marine,
rail, and transit systems. SAE disseminates this information through its
meetings, books, technical papers, magazines, standards, reports, continuing
education programs, and electronic databases.
