Plastics with an Attitude! The 27th Annual SPE Automotive Division AwardsDETROIT, Oct. 9 -- PLASTICS! The very word strikes fear in the minds of aluminum, steel and metal industrialists worldwide. And understandably so. As an industry, plastics manufacturers continue to redefine the way cars and trucks are designed and built. The most innovative of this model year's applications will compete for top honors for the 27th consecutive year at the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) Awards Banquet. On Wednesday, November 12, 1997 over 1,000 OEM engineers, automotive executives, suppliers and media will gather together at the Westin Hotel in Detroit, as the plastics industry collectively celebrates their accomplishments as an industry, by acknowledging this year's award winners. The festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. for cocktails, during which this year's nominated parts will be on display. Dinner follows promptly at 6:30 p.m. "Historically, this event has been the platform on which the entire Automotive Plastics industry shouts their achievements to the world," said SPE Automotive Division Chairman Rich Seim of Blue Water Plastics. "It truly is the Academy Awards of the industry," continued Seim, "as evidenced by our record 40 sponsors (see attached list) and by the sheer number of key industry players in attendance." World Class Awards The SPE Automotive Division Awards is the largest competition of its kind in the world. More than 100 parts will vie for the prestigious "Most Innovative Use of Plastics Award" in the categories of body interior, body exterior, chassis/hardware powertrain, material, process, environmental, and Hall of Fame. Qualified parts must be in production by January 1, 1998. Nominations will be judged on the trend setting nature of the plastics application and its impact on the automotive industry. Considered will be innovations in design, engineering, manufacture, assembly, parts integration, and weight and cost reduction. The "Grand Award" will be presented for the nomination voted best overall. Judging will be done in two stages, according to SPE Automotive Division Publicity Chairman Jay Braboy of Braboy & Associates. Finalists will be selected in each category by vow of the Automotive Division Board of Directors on October 21. Winners in each category, including the Grand Award winner, will be determined on October 28 by a Blue Ribbon Panel composed of technical trade publication and industry experts. The winners will be announced at the awards dinner. Tickets for the event are $70, or a table of ten for $650.
