Meritor Automotive Light Vehicle Systems President Announces Plan to Retire in 1998

    TROY, Mich., Oct. 3 -- Meritor Automotive, Inc. ,
the new $3.1 billion company that now operates Rockwell International
Corporation's Automotive business, today announced that Robert A. Calder, 61,
senior vice president and president of its Light Vehicle Systems (LVS)
business will retire in 1998.
    Calder will remain president of the LVS business until a successor is
named early next year.  Following his retirement, Calder will act in an
advisory role to assure an orderly transition and to provide assistance to the
company.
    Calder joined the company in 1985, where he has served in several senior
management positions for Meritor's LVS business.  Prior to being named LVS
president in 1994, he served as executive vice president of the company's Body
and Chassis Systems business.
    Meritor Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Larry D. Yost said: "Bob
Calder's many years of service and valuable contributions to the success of
this company are well recognized and greatly appreciated.  Meritor's Light
Vehicle Systems business growth has been steady and it is a great testimony to
Bob's strong leadership skills.  We are all pleased that he is staying on in
an advisory capacity with Meritor to ensure that we have a smooth and seamless
transition."
    Meritor, with 1996 sales of approximately $3.1 billion, is a global
supplier of a broad range of components and systems for commercial, specialty
and light vehicles.  The company consists of two businesses: Heavy Vehicle
Systems, a leading supplier of drivetrain systems and components for medium-
and heavy-duty trucks, trailers and off-highway equipment and specialty
vehicles including military, bus and coach, and fire and rescue; and Light
Vehicle Systems, a major supplier of roof, door, access control and seat
adjusting systems, electric motors and electronic controls, suspension systems
and wheels for passenger cars, light trucks and sport utility vehicles.
