General Motors Chairman Issues Statement Regarding Korean Automotive Trade Practices

WASHINGTON, Oct. 1 -- The following is a statement by General
Motors Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President John F. Smith, Jr.,
responding to the U.S. government's decision to designate Korean automotive
trade practices under the U.S. unfair trade law known as "Super 301":

"GM applauds the U.S. government's decision today to stand firm on trade
with Korea. This was not an easy decision and illustrates the
Administration's commitment to a strong trade policy.
"Korea's market has been closed for too long. We hope today's decision
will begin a meaningful dialogue toward opening this important global
market -- to GM and the world."
