Johnson Controls Named 1997 'Contractor of the Year' by New Horizons of Oakland County, Inc.

Company's Michigan-based Automotive Systems Group assists
local group in training and development of people with disabilities

    PLYMOUTH, Mich., Sept. 19 -- Automotive seating and interiors
supplier Johnson Controls has been named 1997 "Contractor of the
Year" by New Horizons of Oakland Country, Inc. -- a non-profit agency that
serves people with disabilities. The award is presented each year to a firm
that demonstrates leadership in helping New Horizons deliver meaningful
training and employment opportunities to its clients in Southeast Michigan.
    Officials from Johnson Controls accepted the award at New Horizons' 33rd
Annual Meeting last night in Auburn Hills, Michigan. The Contractor of the
Year award has been presented to leading organizations by the agency since
1967.
    Johnson Controls -- the world's largest manufacturer of automotive seating
and interior systems -- has been involved with the New Horizons program for
the past two years. Workers at the agency's Novi and Auburn Hills, Michigan
facilities put together automotive power seat adjuster sub-assemblies under a
$400,000 annual contract awarded by the Plymouth, Michigan-based supplier. A
total of 70 employees at the two sites are in involved in the task which
offers participants the opportunity to learn job skills and earn money.
    Assembled products from the New Horizons' finished products are delivered
to Johnson Controls' plant in Lexington, Tennessee for integration into the
company's products.

vice president and general manager of worldwide purchasing for Johnson

real-world work skills -- and delivering excellent services to our company."
    New Horizons of Oakland County -- founded in 1966 -- is a private, not-
for-profit rehabilitation agency based in Auburn Hills. It operates six
facilities in Southeast Michigan and serves more than 800 people with
disabilities daily. New Horizons also provides community-based services in 10
additional locations for 150 people. The organization has a strong history of
serving individuals with disabilities through an array of vocational, economic
and social development programs. It is also well-respected in the local
business community.
