Borg-Warner Automotive Powertrain Systems' Muncie Plant Achieves QS-9000 Certification

    CHICAGO, Sept. 18 -- Borg-Warner Automotive, Inc.
Powertrain Systems Corporation announced today that its Muncie, Indiana plant
has received its QS-9000 certification. QS-9000 is the Quality System
Standard which has been developed by a joint Chrysler/Ford/General Motors Task
Force. It includes both the requirements of the international quality
standard, ISO-9001, and the specific automotive industry requirements which
are more stringent than the international standard. The certification was
issued on June 25, 1997.
"This represents another example of Muncie hourly and salaried employees,
working together to maintain Borg-Warner Automotive as the manufacturer of the
world's highest quality transfer cases. Muncie's transfer case excellence is
attributed to all of our employees realizing that our future depends on
quality products first and foremost," said Tim Manganello, Vice President,
Operations of the Muncie facility.
Powertrain Systems' General Office/Technical Center in Sterling Heights,
Michigan also received QS-9000 certification in June, 1997. "The industry's
requirement of QS-9000 provided Powertrain Systems with an opportunity to
check our internal Sales and Engineering procedures against an industry
sanctioned benchmark and allow us to enhance and where necessary, introduce
procedures that meet and exceed our customers expectations," said Bob
Richardson, Vice President of Sales and Marketing.
QS-9000 certification is a requirement for doing business with the North
American automotive industry. The certification process involved an extensive
audit of the company's overall operating systems by Underwriters Laboratories,
Inc., a third party auditing firm. This audit was completed in April, 1997.
Retention of the certification will require successful completion of semi-
annual audits by this same third party auditor.
Powertrain Systems' Margam, Wales, U.K. manufacturing facility received
QS-9000 certification in May, 1996 and has since been successfully re-audited
twice.
    Chicago-based Borg-Warner Automotive Inc. is a leading
supplier of highly engineered components and systems, primarily for automotive
drivetrain applications. The company operates manufacturing facilities in 12
countries serving the North American, European and Asian automotive markets.
