J. Mays to Succeed Jack Telnack as Head of Ford's Global Design Team

    DEARBORN, Mich., Sept. 15 -- J. C. Mays has been elected vice
president - Design, effective October 1, succeeding Jack Telnack who has
announced his intention to retire at the end of the year.
    Mays has been vice president - Design Development for SHR Perceptual
Management since 1995.  Previously, Mays held a number of senior design
positions with the German automaker Audi and its parent company Volkswagen.
    "We welcome the breadth of experience J. Mays will bring to our product
development process," said Ford Chairman Alex Trotman.
"Distinctive, purposeful design is an essential element in our plans to excite
and delight millions of customers throughout the world."
    Mays was a design director for Audi in Ingolstadt, Germany, from 1993 to
1994.  In 1989, Mays was named chief designer at Volkswagen of America's
Design Center in Simi Valley, Calif.  From 1983 to 1984, Mays had been a
senior designer for BMW AG in Munich.  He began his career as a designer with
Audi AG in Ingolstadt in 1980.
    Mays, 42, studied journalism at the University of Oklahoma, and graduated
with a Bachelor of Science degree from Art Center College of Design in
Pasadena, Calif.  He has received numerous awards of recognition as the
designer of the VW Concept 1 in 1994, the Audi AVUS in 1991 and the Audi 80 in
1983.
