SMS Receives Purchase Contract from Automotive Manufacturer Toyota

    AUSTIN, Texas, Sept. 15 -- Scientific Measurement Systems
(OTC Bulletin Board: SCMS) (SMS) announced today that it has received an order
from Toyota Motor Corporation .  The computed tomography (CT)
system from SMS will be used for inspection of aluminum engine blocks in a
Toyota facility in Japan.  This is the second sale for SMS to a major
manufacturer in Japan; in December of 1996 SMS delivered a system to
Bridgestone Ltd. of Japan, a major tire manufacturer.
    "The use of our industrial CT systems in manufacturing, for high speed
imaging for process control, both in-line and off-line, represents one of our
major growth areas for the future," noted Mike Ervin, President and CEO of

in Japan's technology markets.  The automotive industry, including the
suppliers, represent a rich opportunity for applications of CT.  That

speed of industrial CT."
    SMS designs, manufactures, and sells industrial CT systems to a worldwide
customer base.  In addition, SMS is engaged in a joint research program to
improve the speed of industrial CT with General Electric , General
Motors , and EG&G partially funded by a NIST Advanced
Technology Award.  This program is focused on developing new "ultra-fast 3D
CT" technology for the future that could significantly increase CT data
acquisition speeds as well as the resulting reconstruction of images from that
data.
