Ward's Reports Estimated Production
SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Sept. 11 -- Vehicle production in the
U.S., Canada and Mexico is expected to hit 311,895 units this week, including
154,992 cars and 156,903 trucks, according to Ward's Automotive Reports.
With this week's production, estimated calendar year North American output
now totals 11,106,370 units. That's up 0.7 percent compared to the 11,029,393
vehicles built in like-1996.
U.S. vehicle production is expected to total 235,908 units this week, up
19.9 percent from the 196,743 units made during last week's holiday-shortened
work schedule. Calendar 1997 U.S. car and truck production now stands at
8,321,490, a drop of 0.5 percent from like-1996's pace.
In Canada, automakers will manufacture 48,810 cars and trucks this week,
an increase of 16.1 percent from last week's total of 42,056 units. Estimated
calendar year Canadian car and truck production now stands at 1,844,569 units,
up 6.6 percent from like-1996 levels.
Of the cars and trucks slated for production this week in the United
States, General Motors Corp. accounts for 37.1 percent; Ford Motor Co., 28.0
percent; Chrysler Corp., 15.7 percent; Honda of America Mfg. Inc., 5.0
percent; Toyota Motor Mfg., 3.4 percent; Nissan Motor Mfg., 2.6 percent; New
United Motor Mfg. Inc., 1.8 percent; Subaru-Isuzu Automotive Inc., 1.8
percent; Mitsubishi Motor Mfg. of America Inc., 1.6 percent; AutoAlliance
International Inc., 0.5 percent; BMW of North America Inc., 0.4 percent; and
other manufacturers, 2.1 percent.
