Chrysler International Reports August Sales

8 September 1997

Chrysler International Sales Surge 21 Percent; United Kingdom, Up 69 Percent, Leads Markets

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Sept. 8 -- Surging demand for its right-
hand-drive vehicles powered Chrysler Corporation to a 69 percent
sales increase in the United Kingdom last month and helped set an August
record for Chrysler sales outside North America.
Chrysler International sales totaled 21,108 vehicles, an increase of 21
percent from August 1996, when sales were 17,382, the previous record for the
month. Latin America sales -- including a 268 percent increase in Brazil and
a 184 percent gain in Argentina -- grew 85 percent from a year ago to 4,533
vehicles.
August was the third consecutive month in which Chrysler International
sales exceeded 21,000 vehicles.
United Kingdom sales in August were 4,654 -- highest of any nation in
Chrysler's international markets -- compared with 2,761 a year ago. For the
year to date through August, U.K. dealers sold 13,700 vehicles, surpassing
Germany to lead Europe, which had overall sales 23 percent ahead of a year
ago.
Strong sales of the right-hand-drive Chrysler Voyager minivan, Jeep(R)
Cherokee and Jeep Wrangler also fueled a 75 percent August increase in
Australia.
Wrangler sales outside North America, including left- and right-hand-drive
vehicles, were 236 percent higher in August than they were a year ago.
Cherokee sales were up 10 percent, and Voyager was up 47 percent.
In Chrysler International's Middle East/Africa region, sales in August
were 19 percent ahead of last year. Asia/Pacific region sales fell 13 percent
from a year ago, due mainly to declines in Taiwan and Japan.
