Denso Selects Unigraphics For Core CAD/CAM System

Largest Automotive Supplier in Japan to Standardize on Unigraphics
for its Design Through Manufacturing Needs

ST. LOUIS, Sept. 5 -- EDS Unigraphics today announced that
Denso Corp. -- the largest automotive supplier in Japan -- has chosen
Unigraphics(R) as its worldwide standard in CAD/CAM.
"We're very pleased with Denso's decision to standardize on Unigraphics,"
says Don Davidson, Asia/Pacific managing director, EDS Unigraphics. "Denso's
decision represents a vote of confidence and reinforces our belief that
Unigraphics is the leading CAD/CAM/CAE system for the global automotive
industry. Denso's selection of Unigraphics as its main core system will allow
the company to better focus on its competencies in manufacturing automotive
subsystems while enjoying the benefits of the industry-leading CAD/CAM/CAE
solution."
Denso is developing a new integrated CAD/CAM/CAE/PDM system called DECCS
(Denso Engineering Core Computing System) to help focus its development
efforts on specific processes and to take full advantage of 3-D modeling and
virtual prototyping capabilities. Unigraphics will be the CAD/CAM platform
for DECCS.
To meet Denso's needs for a CAD/CAM/CAE system redesign, EDS Unigraphics
and its Japanese distributor Fujitsu worked closely to show Denso the
advantages of choosing Unigraphics as its corporate DECCS solution.
"We found Unigraphics to be far superior over other CAD/CAM systems in
important areas such as total product modeling and customization," says
Keisuke Sawada, managing director, Denso I-TECH. "Moreover, the Fujitsu/EDS
Unigraphics team was the only one that provided extensive resources to help us
implement the technology enterprise-wide.
"Unigraphics is the best solution to meet both our short-term and
long-term product development goals," adds Sawada. "It is the system for
today -- with a new advanced architecture in place to address the future."
EDS Unigraphics/Fujitsu teamwork was key to this win. "We truly believe
Unigraphics is the best solution for large-scale, worldwide product
development," says Hiroyasu Inomata, general manager, Fujitsu. "As a leading
provider of CAD/CAM/CAE products and services in Japan, we look forward to
helping Denso succeed with Unigraphics' technology."
Denso plans to use Object Oriented Programming techniques to develop
DECCS. EDS Unigraphics is providing application-engineering to aid in this
activity. In order to prove the benefits of its 3-D modeling virtual
prototyping initiative, Denso is already using Unigraphics in a pilot project
focused on air-conditioning units. The project goals are to reduce the number
of physical prototypes and to get products to market more quickly. The
benefits of Unigraphics' solid modeling with CAE are quickly evidencing
themselves.
Denso Corp. is headquartered in Kariya City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan.
Denso produces automotive air-conditioners and heaters, electrical control
equipment, fuel management systems, radiators, meters and filters.
Denso is a spin-off company from Toyota Motor Corp. supplying parts to
almost all domestic automakers and expanding overseas, exporting nearly
20 percent of its production. Denso has more than 40,000 employees, working
in 11 plants and 21 branch offices in Japan, as well as in 42 overseas
companies in 21 countries. Denso's revenues are in excess of $11.9 billion
(U.S.). Denso I-TECH is a spin-off company from Denso that used to be its IT
group. It is 100 percent owned by Denso.
