WARD'S REPORTS ESTIMATED PRODUCTION
SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Sept. 4 -- Vehicle production in the U.S.,
Canada and Mexico is expected to hit 264,507 units in this American holiday-
shortened work week, including 132,764 cars and 131,743 trucks, according to
Ward's Automotive Reports.
With this week's production, estimated calendar year North American output
now totals 10,795,188 units. That's up 0.9 percent compared to the 10,697,361
vehicles built in like-1996.
Due to the Labor Day holiday on Monday, U.S. vehicle production is
expected to total 195,842 units this week, down 18.2 percent from last week's
output of 239,353. Calendar 1997 U.S. car and truck production now stands at
8,085,115, a drop of 0.3 percent from like-1996's pace.
In Canada, automakers will manufacture 43,230 cars and trucks this week, a
decline of 7.5 percent from last week's total of 46,745 units. Estimated
calendar year Canadian car and truck production now stands at 1,796,849 units,
up 6.9 percent from like-1996 levels.
Of the cars and trucks slated for production this week in the United
States, General Motors Corp. accounts for 38.3 percent; Ford Motor Co., 30.0
percent; Chrysler Corp., 13.4 percent; Honda of America Mfg. Inc., 3.7
percent; Toyota Motor Mfg., 3.2 percent; Nissan Motor Mfg., 2.5 percent; New
United Motor Mfg. Inc., 2.3 percent; Mitsubishi Motor Mfg. of America Inc.,
1.9 percent; Subaru-Isuzu Automotive Inc., 1.7 percent; BMW of North America
Inc., 0.5 percent; AutoAlliance International Inc., 0.0 percent; and other
manufacturers, 2.5 percent.
