Volkswagen Reports August Sales - Second Best in Nine YearsAUBURN HILLS, Mich., Sept. 3 -- With sales of 14,132, Volkswagen of America, Inc. reported its second best August sales results since 1988. This figure represents a 6.9 percent decline from last August's very strong figure of 15,176, which was the best since 1988. For the year, Volkswagen is slightly ahead of last year's pace. Year-to-date, Volkswagen has sold 94,727 new cars, up one-half percent over the same period in 1996 when sales were 94,261. "Our build out on the Passat has been extremely successful," said Steve Wilhite, Volkswagen of America's senior executive in charge of marketing. "The good news is the decks are clear and we're ready for the highly anticipated introduction of the all-new Passat this fall. Strong Jetta sales, which are up more than 5 percent for the year, have helped take up some of that slack." Also notable among Volkswagen's August results were brisk sales of the Cabrio model at 972 versus last year's figure of 435, a 123 percent increase. SOURCE Volkswagen of America, Inc.
