American Honda Has Best Sales Month Ever; First 100,000 Vehicle Month Shatters Past Records
TORRANCE, Calif., Sept. 3 -- American Honda recorded the best
sales month in its history and surged through the 100,000 vehicle sales
barrier for the first time ever with total sales of 100,709 in August,
shattering the prior record of 87,929 set just last month and up 38.2 percent
from a year ago, according to figures released today by American Honda Motor
Co., Inc.
"The stock market may have bounced up and down throughout the month, but
consumer confidence never wavered," said Tom Elliott, American Honda executive
vice president. "August was one of those months where everything clicked.
Consumer demand was strong and we finally had the inventory to meet it."
The Honda Division set a new one-month record with sales of 86,565, up
38.8 percent from August '96 and topping the previous record of 77,365 set in
August 1995. Civic sales of 34,141 were up 55.3 percent from last year and
also set a new one-month record. The Accord posted sales of 41,462, up
20 percent from a year ago and a new August record.
Acura Division sales of 14,144 were up 34.8 percent -- the second best
month ever for Acura and the best month since the all-time record was set in
August, 1989. Both the CL luxury sports coupe and TL luxury sedan set all-
time one-month records with CL sales up 103.6 percent and TL sales up 43.6
percent. RL sales set a new August record and were the second best month ever
for the luxury sedan carline.
