SPX Corporation Elects Thomas J. Riordan an Officer

    MUSKEGON, Mich., Aug. 28 -- SPX Corporation today
announced the election of Thomas J. Riordan as an officer of the company.
    Mr. Riordan, who is 41, adds the title of corporate officer to his current
position as President of the company's OE Tool and Equipment Group.  He joined
SPX Corporation in 1996 from Consolidated Sawmill Machinery International,
Inc., Portland, Oregon, where he was President.  Prior to that he was Vice
President of Manufacturing at IVEX Corporation.  Mr. Riordan also held
positions with J.I. Case in North America and Europe, and with Borg-Warner
Automotive.
    He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from
Northwestern University and a Master of Science degree in Industrial
Administration from Purdue University.
