American Tire Reaches Agreement with Chrobak

    RAVENNA, Ohio, Aug. 21 -- On August 19, 1997, Richard A.
Steinke, Chairman and CEO of American Tire Corporation ("ATC") ,
and Dennis S. Chrobak, ATC's former President announced that they had entered
into an agreement to resolve the disputes between them relating to
Mr. Chrobak's employment and ownership interest in ATC.  The terms of the
agreement were not disclosed, however, both Mr. Steinke and Mr. Chrobak
expressed satisfaction with the terms of the agreement.
