LucasVarity Calipers for Future Dodge Ram Pick-Ups

    LIVONIA, Mich., Aug. 19 -- The Light Vehicle Braking Systems
division of LucasVarity plc , the global automotive, diesel engine,
aftermarket and aerospace products and systems group, has received a letter of
intent from Chrysler Corp. for the purchase of caliper brake
components for future models of Chrysler's popular Dodge Ram pick-up trucks.
    For the seven months through July, 1997, Dodge Ram sales totaled nearly
200,000 units.
    LucasVarity also supplies as standard equipment rear-wheel anti-lock brake
systems (ABS) on all Chrysler light trucks, sport utility vehicles and
full-size vans.  Its four-wheel ABS system is optional on these models.
    The value of the new caliper business was not disclosed.
    "We especially appreciate this new Chrysler business because it reinforces
our leadership position in the North American light truck market in foundation
brake components as well as ABS," said Divisional Managing Director Steve
Lunn.
    Headquartered in Livonia, Mich., the Light Vehicle Braking Systems
division of LucasVarity supplies braking components to virtually every major
automotive manufacturer in the world.
