Exide Corporation Announces First Quarter Cash Dividend

    BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich., Aug. 12 -- Arthur M. Hawkins,
chairman, president add chief executive officer of Exide Corporation
, today announced that the corporation has declared a cash dividend
of $.02 (two cents) per share of common stock payable September 8, 1997, to
shareholders of record on August 22, 1997.
    Exide Corporation will announce second quarter fiscal 1998 earnings on
October 30, 1997; third quarter earnings on January 29, 1998, and fourth
quarter/year-end earnings on June 11, 1998.
