Volkswagen Reports July Sales

    AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Aug. 4 -- Volkswagen of America, Inc.
reported sales of 11,301 for the month of July, giving the German automaker a
year-to-date total of 80,595, a 1.9 percent increase over last year's 79,085.
    Volkswagen's 1997 July sales represented its second best since 1990 but
were down 14.4 percent from last July's exceptionally strong results of
13,204.
