Chrysler Sets Monthly Record for Minivans; Company's Second-Best July in Total U.S. Sales

    AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Aug. 1 -- Sales of Dodge Caravan,
Plymouth Voyager and Chrysler Town & Country broke a July record for Chrysler
Corporation's market-leading minivans and contributed to the second-
best July in Chrysler history.
    Overall U.S. sales were 199,662 -- second only to the incredible 220,139-
vehicle total in July 1996 -- for a year-over-year decline of 9 percent.
    "Minivans are stronger than ever, Dodge Truck set a July record and we had
new monthly highs for Chrysler Sebring Coupe and LHS, and for Dodge Stratus,
Intrepid, Viper and Dakota," said James P. Holden, Executive Vice President -
Sales and Marketing.
    "Some of the totals are lagging a bit behind last year's records, but the
market is solid and we're seeing strength in sales of our key products,"
Holden said.  "We'll add to that strength this fall, when we introduce the
all-new Dodge Intrepid and Chrysler Concorde -- sedans that will set new
standards for design, innovation and value.  On the truck side, our new 1998
Dodge Ram Quad Cab will be the first full-size pickup to offer dual access
doors to the rear seat."
    Minivan sales for the month totaled 50,547, up 1 percent from last
year's 50,156, the previous July record.
    Overall truck sales were 134,858, compared with 145,997 a year
ago. Passenger car sales totaled 64,804, compared from 74,142 in July 1996.
    Chrysler's U.S. sales for January-July were 1,400,807 vehicles,
compared with 1,516,031 in the comparable period a year ago.
