Toyota Announces Strong July Sales, Many Vehicles Selling in Record Numbers

    TORRANCE, Calif., Aug. 1 -- Toyota Motor Sales, USA (TMS),
Inc., today announced July sales of 108,939, an increase of 14.6 percent over
the same period last year.  On a year-to-date basis, total sales of 738,177
represent an increase of 10.4 percent over the 672,205 sold in 1996.
    Yale Gieszl, TMS executive vice president, noted consumers are responding
to the economy's double-dose of low interest rates and solid growth.  "With no
peaks and valleys in the economy, consumer spending is on the straight and
narrow," he said.
    Leading Toyota's sales was Camry with 32,555 sales, an increase of
8.7 percent and the best July in the model's history.  On a year-to-date
basis, 239,041 sales place Camry 14.7 percent ahead of last year's record
pace.
    Also seeing best-ever July sales was Avalon with 6,382, an increase of
2.6 percent that helped push year-to-date sales to 43,957, up 6.1 percent.  In
addition, Corolla posted sales of 21,805, up 13.9 percent.
    Toyota's trucks and sport utility vehicles continue to ride the wave of
consumer popularity with 4Runner and RAV4 both recording best-ever July sales.
4Runner's 12,137 was 70.6 percent ahead of last year, while RAV4's 6,391 was
up 27.4 percent.  Land Cruiser sales of 999 increased 7.7 percent.  Tacoma
compact-truck sales of 12,624 were up 45.9 percent.
    The Lexus Division reported total sales of 9,291, an increase of
42.7 percent and its best-ever July.  Leading the way was ES 300 with 6,342
sales, an increase of 90.1 percent over the previous year and its best-ever
month.  Also selling well were SC 300 with 288, up 67.4 percent, and the LX
450 with 687, up 13.9 percent.
    North American-built units made up 61.1 percent of July's sales, up from
58.6 percent the previous year.
