The Cat's Out of the Bag: Mercury Cougar is Back

    ROCHESTER, Mich., July 29 -- It's official.  After a brief
hiatus, the Cougar will rejoin the Mercury lineup as a specialty sports coupe.
    Ford Automotive Operations President Jacques Nasser today
confirmed the "rebirth" of Cougar at a news conference for the international
unveiling of the sleek new Mercury MC2 concept car.
    "The MC2 gives an indication of the design vision customers will see in
the new Cougar and the direction our rejuvenated Mercury division is taking,"
Nasser said.
    "Mercury is about fun, flair and flexibility ... and Cougar will deliver
all that and more."
    Nasser announced that the all-new Cougar will be a front-wheel-drive,
two-door specialty sports coupe based on the highly acclaimed
Mondeo/Contour/Mystique platform.
    Nasser also confirmed that the all-new Cougar will debut as a 1999 model,
asking the media to "stay tuned" for more details in coming months.
