Chrysler Announces New Jeep(R) Plant Site in Toledo

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., July 28 -- Chrysler Corporation
announced today that it plans to build a new 1.1-million square-foot
manufacturing facility in the City of Toledo. The new plant, scheduled to be
located adjacent to Chrysler's current manufacturing facilities on Stickney
Avenue on Toledo's north side, will produce Jeep sport-utility vehicles for
sale worldwide.
The project represents an estimated $1.2 billion total investment and
includes more than $600 million for an assembly facility, machinery and
equipment at the new Stickney site. It also includes refurbishment of an
existing 290,000 square-foot building on the current Stickney Avenue site, an
improved paint shop at the current Jeep Parkway site, and various other
improvements at the Parkway facility.
"The decision to build the new Jeep facility concludes many months of
analysis and cooperation among Governor Voinovich and Mayor Finkbeiner and
other officials, as well as Jack Sizemore, Regional Director for the UAW and
other local UAW officials," said Robert J. Eaton, Chairman - Chrysler
Corporation. "These gentlemen provided strong leadership that resulted in
bringing this project together. Our major consideration was to have a new
manufacturing facility that would allow us to retain our current outstanding
Toledo workforce, and capitalize on their continuous commitment to building
world-class products."
"The entire Corporation was touched by the outpouring of support displayed
by the people of Toledo. With historical roots going back to the early part
of this century, the brand-name Jeep always has been and will continue to be
synonymous with the City of Toledo," added Eaton.
Construction of the new assembly facility is tentatively scheduled to
begin in early 1998, with vehicle production slated for 2001.
