Ward's Reports Estimated Production

    SOUTHFIELD, Mich., July 17 -- Vehicle production in the U.S.,
Canada and Mexico is expected to hit 266,615 units this week, including
149,045 cars and 117,570 trucks, according to Ward's Automotive Reports.  The
total reflects a return to normal production levels following industry summer
shutdowns.
    With this week's production, estimated calendar year North American output
now totals 8,748,709, a 2.3 percent hike from the 8,555,239, cars and trucks
produced in like-1996.
    U.S. vehicle production is expected to total 210,655 units this week, up
332.3 percent from last week's 48,735.  Calendar 1997 U.S. car and truck
production now stands at 6,529,646, an increase of 0.5 percent from like-
1996's pace.
    In Canada, automakers will manufacture 34,928 vehicles this week, a jump
of 123.2 percent from last week's 15,646 units.  Estimated calendar year
Canadian car and truck production totals 1,481,273 units, an increase of 7.6
percent from like-1996 levels.
    Of the cars and trucks slated for production this week in the United
States, General Motors Corp. accounts for 36.5 percent; Ford Motor Co., 34.7
percent; Honda of America Mfg. Inc., 6.3 percent; Chrysler Corp., 5.6 percent;
Nissan Motor Mfg. 4.4 percent; New United Motor Mfg. Inc., 3.7 percent; Toyota
Motor Mfg. 3.4 percent; Mitsubishi Motor Mfg. of America Inc., 1.4 percent;
Subaru-Isuzu Automotive Inc. 1.0 percent; BMW of North America Inc., 0.6
percent; AutoAlliance International Inc., 0.5 percent; and other
manufacturers, 1.9 percent.
