New Porsche 911 Turbo S Scores First Win at Pikes Peak

    COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., July 8 -- A 1997 Porsche 911 Turbo S,
driven by Jeff Zwart, won the High Performance Showroom Stock class here in
the recent 1997 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
Zwart's win marked the first time a Porsche 911 Turbo S has entered
victory lane since its world debut at the New York International Auto Show
last March. The Porsche 911 Turbo S is the most exotic and powerful Porsche
production car yet offered for sale in North America.
Based on the all-wheel-drive Porsche 911 Turbo, the Turbo S has the
Turbo's standard 3.6-liter, twin-turbocharged, air-cooled, flat six-cylinder
engine, but has 424 horsepower compared to the 400 horsepower in the Turbo.
That's the highest power output ever derived from a Porsche production engine
sold on this continent. The "ultimate" air-cooled Porsche 911 carries a MSRP
of $150,000.
For Zwart, of Woody Creek, Colo., it was his fourth consecutive class
crown. In recording the victory, he also set a class record time of 12:24.97.
The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is the second oldest continuous
motorsport event in the United States. It's a 12.42-mile climb to 14,110 feet
with 156 turns to the top. This year's race attracted more than 100 vehicles
in 10 different classes.
Zwart is no stranger to Porsche power, having won at Pikes Peak in a
Porsche 911 Carrera 4 (1994) and in Porsche 911 Twin Turbos (1995 and 1996).
Entering the 75th running of the event this year, he had just secured a
second-place finish in a 25-day, 9,400-mile FIA marathon rally from Panama to
Alaska in a Porsche 914-6.
