Board Officers Elected: IBM's Sergeant Named Chairman of the Board For the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG)SOUTHFIELD, Mich., July 7 -- Roger N. Sergeant, automotive industry manager for International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) , has been elected chairman of the board of directors for the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG), a not-for-profit trade association of more than 1,300 North American auto and truck manufacturers and their suppliers. The announcement was made by AIAG Executive Director Thomas S. Hoy. Sergeant has served on AIAG's board of directors since 1991. He was vice chairman of the AIAG board from 1996 to 1997. A 33-year veteran of IBM, Sergeant has spent a majority of his career in automotive-related assignments. Before his current assignment, he managed IBM's automotive center from 1989 to 1992. Prior to this, he held a variety of management positions on IBM's General Motors and Ford account team. He earned a bachelor of science degree in industrial engineering in 1962 and a master's of business administration in 1963 from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich. Sergeant also represents IBM on the Founding Board of Southeast Michigan Alliance for Advanced Manufacturing. The 21-member AIAG board of directors consists of a cross-section of AIAG's membership, represented by senior industry executives from the Big Three automakers, truck manufacturers and Tier One automotive suppliers. The executives provide strategic direction and oversee the activities of the AIAG's cooperative industry efforts. Other officers named to AIAG's board of directors for 1997-98 are: -- Stephen E. Zimmer, of Chrysler Corporation, to board vice chairman; -- Thomas J. Feely, of Dana Corporation, to board treasurer; -- Jack R. Loeffler, of Ford Motor Company, to board secretary; and -- Derryl R. Barringer, of General Motors Corporation, to past chairman. Founded in 1982, AIAG is a not-for-profit trade association of more than 1,300 North American auto and truck manufacturers and their suppliers. Originally recognized for its efforts to standardize electronic data interchange and bar code standards to assist Tier One suppliers, AIAG's mission has expanded to cover all levels of the OEM supply chain, as well as to include numerous programs and initiatives aimed at improving its members' productivity and quality.
