Volkswagen Reports June Sales -- Best First-Half Year Results in Seven Years

    AUBURN HILLS, Mich., July 3 -- Volkswagen of America, Inc.
reported sales of 13,057 for the month of June, giving the automaker a
year-to-date total of 69,294, a 5.2 percent increase over last year's mark of
65,881.
    This represents the best first-half year results for Volkswagen in the
U.S. since 1990.
    Volkswagen's 1997 June sales were down 9.1 percent from last June's
exceptionally strong results of 14,358, which at the time represented the best
June since 1990.
