Land Rover Reports Record June and First-Half Sales

Monthly Record Set for Sales of Discovery at 2,029

LANHAM, Md., July 1 -- Land Rover North America, Inc. today
reported best ever June sales of 2,708 units and record-breaking first-half
sales of ll,376. The month's total compares to 1,832 units sold during June
of 1996, the first-half sales compare to 10,571 in 1996. In addition, it was
the best ever month for Discovery sales at 2,029 and the company's best ever
second quarter.
Charles R. Hughes, president, LRNA, said, "As we celebrate our sales
success during June and the year's first half, we are gratified that the
supply constraints of earlier in the year have eased, enabling us to better
meet demand for our sought-after full-time four-wheel drive Discovery, Range
Rover and Defender 90 vehicles."
LRNA's recently released 132-page Authoritative Guide to Compact
Sport-Utility Vehicles, which provides objective information to assist
prospective buyers in making an appropriate choice in purchasing a sport
utility vehicle, has been hailed by the public and industry insiders alike.
Launched in May, to date the Guide has been requested by more than 10,000
consumers through the company's web site at http://www.LandRover.com or by calling
l-800-FINE4WD. In addition, more than 12,000 copies have been made available
through Land Rover retailers. Excerpts from the Guide are available at the
web site.
"We have much of which to be proud," Mr. Hughes said. "We have set the
gold standard for the SUV market since Land Rover's entry into the United
States with Range Rover in 1987; since then, the company has sold more than
94,000 vehicles. Our Land Rover Centres, first opened in 1994 and now
numbering 50 out of our 106 member dealer body, are recognized as the place to
find knowledgeable sales staff, superior customer service, factory-trained
technical support and expert four-wheel drive instruction, all in a unique,
comfortable and relaxed setting."
In addition, in April, the company dedicated its new 60,000 square foot
corporate headquarters, the second phase of a more than $12 million building
program begun last year with the adjacent Land Rover Demonstration Course at
Lanham Creek. The final phase, Land Rover University and a second
demonstration/training course which will serve as the company's primary
training center for retail and corporate employees, is nearing
completion.
