Toyota Announces Best-Ever First Six Months, Steady June Sales

    TORRANCE, Calif., July 1 -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A.,
Inc., today announced its best-ever first six months of sales, with year-to-
date total sales of 629,238, up 9.7 percent.  Total June sales of 96,040 units
were down 2.3 percent
    "Despite the anticipated cooling of the economy in the second quarter,
consumer confidence continues to buoy industry sales," said Yale Gieszl, TMS
executive vice president.  "If interest rates remain stable, consumer spending
should remain strong during the second half of the year."
    Toyota's sedan sales were led by Camry at 30,745 units, up 9.9 percent
over last year.  Camry's year-to-date sales of 206,486 units were up 15.7
percent over last year.
    Strong truck and sport-utility sales were led by 4Runner, which registered
its best-ever June with 10,434 units, up 38.3 percent.  On a year-to-date
basis, the 4Runner recorded 62,125 units, up 22.7, while the RAV4 continued
its strong sales trend with 33,136 units, up 34.6 percent over last year.
    Despite limited supply, the Lexus Division reported an increased sales
total of 6,775 up 2.4 percent.  Recording its best-ever June was volume-leader
ES 300 with sales of 4,639 units, up 27.4 percent.  The LX 450 luxury sport-
utility vehicle continues to be a strong performer with 628 units, up 7.9
percent for the month.
    Toyota's North American-produced (NAP) vehicles represented 63.8 percent
of total June sales, up 2.1 percentage points over last year.  On a year-to-
date basis, NAP vehicles represent 62.9 percent of sales, up 1.4 points from
the previous year.
