Chrysler Announces June Sales

Chrysler Posts Record Truck Sales, Third-Best June in its History

    AUBURN HILLS, Mich., July 1 -- Propelled by record demand for
light trucks, Chrysler Corporation posted U.S. sales of 219,756
vehicles last month -- the third-best June in its history and close to the
torrid pace of a year ago.
    "This month didn't wind down, it wound up," said James P. Holden,
Executive Vice President - Sales and Marketing.  "We had a strong finish for
Jeep(R) Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, and Dodge Dakota -- strong enough to help us
set a June record for light truck sales.
    "Minivan sales continued to be strong, posting a solid increase over last
year and over the previous month," Holden said.  "June was the best month so
far this year for minivans."
    June also was the best month so far this year for overall U.S. sales of
Chrysler products.
    Truck sales were 147,276 vehicles, up 2 percent from June 1996 and
surpassing the record of 146,986 set in June 1995.  Jeep(R) Grand Cherokee was
up 2 percent from a year ago, Cherokee was up 3 percent, and combined minivan
sales posted a 2 percent increase.
    Passenger car sales were off 15 percent, at 72,480, but monthly
records were set for Chrysler Sebring Coupe and Chrysler LHS.
    Total U.S. sales were 219,756, a 4 percent decline from June 1996,
when Chrysler sales totaled 228,828.
    Chrysler sales for the first six months of 1997 totaled 1,201,145
vehicles, compared with 1,295,892 for January-June 1996.
