Exide Corporation is Certified QS9000

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich., June 30 -- Exide Corporation
, the world's largest manufacturer and marketer of automotive,
marine and industrial batteries, today announced that it has achieved QS9000
quality certification in its North American manufacturing plants and corporate
offices, according to Arthur M. Hawkins, Exide CEO, Chairman and President.
The QS9000 quality registration standard is the result of a cooperative
effort between Ford, General Motors, Chrysler, as well as several truck
manufacturers, to establish stringent and standardized quality guidelines for
their suppliers. The QS9000 standard is based on the IS09000 quality
standard, but is much more detailed and difficult to obtain and maintain.
The "Big Three" automakers have mandated that all their suppliers earn the
QS9000 standard in order to qualify for future contracts. In order to achieve
the QS9000 certification, each Exide plant that produces batteries for any of
the major automakers had to be certified along with Exide's corporate offices.
Exide Corporation passed and received this certification early in June.
"We take our responsibility as the highest-quality, lowest-cost battery
producer in the world very seriously," noted Hawkins. "We always knew we had
top quality people, systems and products, and the QS9000 certification is one
more validation of this fact. Our QS9000 Team worked closely and tirelessly
with our manufacturing plants and corporate offices to ensure that the
processes and procedures required to earn this certification were in place,
and I commend them on their efforts."
Exide Corporation is headquartered in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, with
administrative offices in Reading, Pennsylvania.
