Summer Temps and Vacation Costs Reach Record Highs, Says AAA

    SAN FRANCISCO, May 22 -- The record number of summer
travelers will encounter record vacation costs this summer, said AAA.  Average
daily food and lodging costs will be up 3 percent, costing a family of four
$199 per day.  "A family of four should expect to pay an average of $95 per
night for lodging, up $3 from a year ago," said Bronwyn Hogan, AAA
spokesperson.  "Average daily meal costs also increased by $3, to $104 per
day".
    The most popular vacation destinations are often the most expensive.
Hawaii, a favorite spot for AAA members planning a holiday getaway by air, is
also the most expensive state for vacation costs.  Costs for meals and lodging
for a family of four in the Aloha state average $411 per day.  California
ranks as the fourth most expensive state to visit, where lodging and meals
will average $258 per day.
    North Dakota offers vacationers the least expensive vacation options, with
family meals and lodging costs averaging $129 per day, Nebraska ($137 per
day), South Dakota ($140), Iowa ($146) and Kansas ($147) round out the list of
low-cost vacation states.
    "If traveling by car, don't forget to budget money for gasoline,"
continues Hogan.  "Remember that entertainment, souvenirs and unexpected
expenses also need to be figured into the vacation budget".
    AAA offers the following advice to cut vacation costs:

    * Book accommodations in advance to ensure availability and selection.  A
AAA travel agent can help find a room that meets individual needs and budget.
    * Stay in outlying areas, away from tourist traps.
    * Pack a picnic or eat your large meal at lunch to take advantage of lower
menu prices.
    * To lower fuel costs, keep your car in top condition, and travel at
steady, moderate speeds.  Visit a AAA Diagnostic clinic before embarking on
your trip to give your car a clean bill of health.
    * Show Your Card and Save! offers discount to AAA members at hotels,
restaurants and attractions.
