Toyota Awards Over $1,000,000 in College Scholarships for Academic Excellence and Community ServiceLEXINGTON, Ky., May 9 -- Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc. (TMS) today awarded over $1,000,000 in scholarships to 100 high school students across the United States. The scholarships are valued at $10,000 and $20,000 each, over four years, for study at a four-year college or university starting in the fall of 1997. The national scholarship program, initiated by TMS in celebration of its 40th anniversary in the United States, annually recognizes high school seniors who excel in academics, effective leadership and community service outside the school setting. The 100 scholarship recipients were guests of honor at a "Celebration of Excellence" in Lexington, where they were joined by education, community and business leaders and recognized by Kentucky Lieutenant Governor Stephen Henry and Edward Augustus, a representative of the United States Department of Education. Highlighting the evening were remarks by Lou Holtz, former head coach of the University of Notre Dame. "Our Community Scholars program extends Toyota's efforts to assist people in improving the quality of life in their communities," explained Yale Gieszl, executive vice president, TMS. "The program mirrors our own community relations goals with much of our corporate involvement focusing on education programs and volunteerism." More than 10,000 high school seniors were nominated by their school to compete in the program, which is managed by the Educational Testing Services in Princeton, New Jersey. The 88 regional and 12 national winners were selected by a panel of college and university admissions officials from across the United States. "The Toyota Community Scholars program offers a wonderful opportunity to highlight what's right with the youth of America. We were overwhelmed with the number of nominees involved in important and positive activities, many of whom had actually created programs to address needs in their communities. All this in addition to being excellent students in the classroom," said Jim Olson, TMS senior vice president and host of the Celebration of Excellence. While in Kentucky, the students toured the Assembly Plant at Toyota Motor Manufacturing in Georgetown, getting a first-hand view of the assembly of Toyota Camrys and Avalons. In addition, the scholars attended a welcome reception and barbecue at the Kentucky Horse Park, and a time management seminar.
