VarityKelsey-Hayes QS-9000 Certified

    LIVONIA, Mich., April 3 -- All VarityKelsey-Hayes
manufacturing, engineering, and central staff operations in the United States
and Europe now meet quality standards required by its Big Three automotive
customers.
Its plant in Detroit, Mich., was the final facility to receive QS-9000
certification, completing a company-wide process begun in 1995 at eight U.S.
manufacturing plants, its manufacturing and engineering facilities in Europe,
and at its headquarters in Livonia, Mich.
All have met these standards many months in advance of a customer
compliance deadline of Dec. 31, 1997.
VarityKelsey-Hayes is North America's leading producer of two-wheel and
four-wheel antilock brake systems with 1996 sales of $2.2 billion.
"Each and every one of our more than 4,500 VarityKelsey-Hayes people
deserves hearty congratulations for a job well done," said Steve Lunn,
Divisional Managing Director of LucasVarity Light Vehicle Braking Systems.
"Certification required diligent attention to detailing and documenting
thousands of processes and procedures," Lunn said. "We are proud to have
achieved certification and are poised to truly delight our customers with the
highest quality of products and services."
Certification by a third-party assessor is required of its direct
suppliers by Chrysler Corp., Ford Motor Company, and General Motors. The
certification process requires suppliers to examine every aspect of work
procedures that can influence the quality of their products.
Standards required by QS-9000 go beyond international quality standards
known as ISO 9000, which were developed in Europe. Auditors return every six
months to ensure that suppliers are adhering to written procedures, and the
entire certification process must be completed every three years.
Certification can take from 12 to 18 months and requires a substantial
investment of time and money.
The company's European operations in Wiesbaden, Germany, and Heerlen, the
Netherlands, were first to receive certification. Subsequently certified were
facilities in Brighton, Detroit, Fenton, Fowlerville, and Jackson, Mich.; in
Fayette, Kingsway, and Mount Vernon, Ohio.
VarityKelsey-Hayes is a business of LucasVarity plc which designs,
manufactures and supplies advanced technology systems, products and services
in the world's automotive diesel engine, aftermarket and aerospace industries.
