More than 96 percent of those voting at UAW Local 662 in Anderson, Indiana and UAW Local 2185 in Meridian, Mississippi, approved the new four year contract in voting which concluded Thursday night. The announcement was made today by UAW President Stephen P. Yokich, Vice President Richard Shoemaker, Region 3 Director Ron Gettelfinger and Region 8 Director Bobby Lee Thompson. "This fine new agreement reflects a productive relationship between the UAW and Delco Remy America, Inc.," Shoemaker stated. Shoemaker directs the UAW GM Department which has collective bargaining responsibility for Delco Remy America, Inc. "We look forward to working with the company to solidify that relationship and to contribute to the company's success," Shoemaker added. UAW-represented workers at Delco Remy America will receive an up-front $2,000 lump-sum payment, followed by 3 percent general wage increases in September 1997 and September 1998. For the remainder of the Agreement, wages and economic benefits will track the 1999 UAW-GM contract. As before, these economic gains will be protected against inflation by cost-of-living allowances (COLA). The new agreement also strengthens job and income security protections. Health care, pensions, health and safety protections and other benefits are improved under the new contract. The new contract also provides both active and retired UAW-Delco Remy America workers up to $1,000 a year in tuition assistance for each dependent child enrolled in an accredited college or post-secondary technical school, as well as up to $1,000 a year in tuition for assistance for retirees. The new contract is a national agreement covering a total of approximately 1,600 UAW-represented workers in Anderson, Indiana and Meridian, Mississippi. It is the first new agreement between the UAW and Delco Remy American, Inc., since the facilities were sold by General Motors in 1994. Previously, UAW members at Delco Remy America were covered under the terms of the UAW-GM National Agreement. SOURCE United Auto Workers
